Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Uganda: Chimpanzee Encounters

Ngamba Island - Chimpanzee

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is one of Uganda’s most meaningful wildlife attractions, located on a lush forested island in Lake Victoria, about 23 kilometers southeast of Entebbe. Managed by the Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), Ngamba Island provides a permanent home for rescued and orphaned chimpanzees, while offering visitors an educational and ethical way to learn about primate conservation in East Africa.

A Forested Island on Lake Victoria

Ngamba Island spans approximately 100 acres of tropical rainforest, surrounded by the calm waters of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest freshwater lake. The island’s natural forest provides a safe, semi-wild environment where chimpanzees can roam freely, socialize, and express natural behaviors. Its scenic location makes the journey itself part of the experience, with boat or speedboat transfers offering panoramic lake views.

Chimpanzees of Ngamba Island

Ngamba Island is home to over 50 rescued chimpanzees, many of whom were victims of illegal wildlife trade, poaching, or habitat loss. These chimpanzees cannot be returned to the wild but are given lifelong care in a protected, natural setting.

Visitors can observe:

  • Social interactions and group dynamics
  • Feeding sessions led by professional caregivers
  • Play, grooming, and communication behaviors

All interactions follow strict animal welfare and conservation guidelines, ensuring minimal human impact and maximum respect for the chimpanzees.

Ngamba Island offers a rare opportunity to connect with chimpanzees in an ethical, educational, and conservation-focused setting. Its beautiful island environment, strong conservation mission, and close-up observation experiences make it one of Uganda’s most rewarding wildlife destinations.

Conservation, Education & Research

Ngamba Island plays a vital role in chimpanzee conservation in Uganda and East Africa. The sanctuary focuses on:

  • Rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned chimpanzees
  • Educating the public about wildlife protection and habitat conservation
  • Supporting research on primate behavior and welfare
  • Advocating against illegal wildlife trafficking

Visitor fees directly support conservation efforts, staff training, veterinary care, and education programs.

Activities & Visitor Experience

Ngamba Island offers a range of responsible tourism experiences, including:

  • Guided sanctuary tours and forest walks
  • Chimpanzee feeding observation (from designated platforms)
  • Educational talks by sanctuary staff
  • Overnight stays for immersive conservation experiences
  • Kayaking and swimming (in designated areas)

This makes Ngamba Island ideal for families, wildlife lovers, students, and eco-conscious travelers.

Best Time to Visit & Access

Ngamba Island can be visited year-round. Access is via boat or speedboat from Entebbe, with transfers taking approximately 45–90 minutes depending on the vessel. The dry seasons (June–August and December–February) offer the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities.

The sanctuary is easily combined with visits to Entebbe, Kampala, the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, or Lake Victoria excursions.
